Super cheap handheld retro 16-bit Sega console review

Play 16bit Sega games on this console

The PXP 3 is a handheld retro console from China. It has clearly been made as to look like the Sony PSP with the name even being similar. The PXP 3 won’t play any Sony games though what it will do is play classic Sega 16-bit Megadrive/Genesis games and although it claims wrongly to have 66666s games built in the actual number is more like just over 130.

Despite the name and looks the PXP 3 isn’t actually as large a PSP and is about 3/4 of the size. Build quality is a bit cheap and plasticy with a small 2.5 inch screen, which is backlit though which is a nice touch. It has quite a few buttons of which only a few work in the games. When you switch it on and you get a menu from where you can choose a list of 16 bit Sega games as well as a few other oddities such as an Angry birds knock off. ¬†While there are a few games that are not worth bothering with it does have some classics that are worth having the PXP for alone such as 3 Sonic the hedgehog games, Ecco the Dolphin, Mortal Kombat, Streets or Rage, Street fighter 2, Dessert Strike, Ghouls & Ghosts, Gunstar heroes, Atomic Robo Kid and Revenge of Shonobi. The games are clearly running in some sort of emulator and some of them fail to work which suggests they are just ROMs dumped onto the consoles memory without any testing, especially as some games appear in the list more than once. There also doesn’t appear to be anyway to save games so if your half way through playing Sonic and then want to switch it off you will have to start play from the beginning next time, which is a shame as if the console does have the advertised 1GB of storage then having a few meagbytes put aside for save games would have not been to difficult. The games do play smoothly with no noticable slow down or dropped frames. Sound wise the quality isn’t great as it’s a bit tinny but it is loud enough. What looks to be a headphone socket is in fact AV out so you can plug it into a TV with the supplied cable and let you play on a big screen, the AV out is only composite video and mono audio. But retro games never look brilliant on modern tellies due to the games being low resolution so the blurriness of composite video actually helps to give it more of an authentic 90s feel. The removable battery lasts a few hours and takes about an 1 hour to charge up and you can also power it using the supplied Mini USB cable.

Retro consoles are usually quite expensive while this retails for about $20 online so if you have fond memories of those 16 bit Sega games or looking for a cheap handheld games machine for the kids and aren’t expecting brilliant build quality then it is worth a punt on the PXP 3.
